All of the names in our records come directly from the official registers meticulously maintained by the hospital. The identities of the 1,255 individuals buried here are recorded in black ink, preserved within two leather-bound volumes now housed safely in the Heritage Centre.

We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Jim from North Lanarkshire Council, who provided us with a detailed map of the cemetery. His efforts have been instrumental in helping us piece together the layout of the lairs—an invaluable step in restoring dignity and remembrance to those interred here.

We are also deeply thankful to the staff at the Heritage Centre in Motherwell, who have shown unwavering patience and support. They may well flinch when they see an email titled “Hartwood Cemetery,” as we have sent them information on more than 500 potential relatives during our research.

Thanks to this collective effort, the silent stories held within these grounds are being remembered—person by person, lair by lair.
